I know what you are thinking…and no, the pen is not scented! Phew! Compost is an extremely important part of gardening and I try to compost plant waste as well as kitchen scraps as much as possible. In the spring I heavily compost all the gardens, in the fall I use organic matter mixed in with compost to put the beds to rest for the winter. To make the compost pen I select a variety of elements from the different parts of my compost pile. Once completely dried, I grind the ingredients and combine them with a transparent polymer/resin. I roll it into thin sheets and make each pen one at a time. Each individual pen is different; you can actually see the crushed compost. The unique texture and color comes directly from the different ingredients. The pen uses a standard cross refill, easy how to instructions and a story card are included.
